The chief agricultural export crop is coffee, providing about 65% of Ethiopia’s foreign exchange earnings (2006).

Coffee is significant to the Ethiopian economy. More than 15 million people derive their livelihood from the coffee sector. According to recent estimates, coffee contributes 10% of Ethiopia’s GDP. Other exports include:

• live animals
• hides
• gold
• pulses
• oilseeds, and
• chat (a leafy shrub having psychotropic qualities when chewed)

Reliant on a few vulnerable crops for its foreign exchange earnings and dependent on imported oil, the country lacks sufficient foreign exchange.
